Health Tip: Understanding Measles
Measles is a contagious disease caused by a virus that is passed through the air and direct contact, says the World Health Organization.
The first signs of measles are high fever, cough, red and watery eyes, and small white spots inside the cheeks. Over the next few weeks, a rash develops and spreads.
Most measles deaths are the result of the virus’s complications.
Unvaccinated children and pregnant women are at high risk of measles. Although there is no complete treatment, severe complications can be minimized with good nutrition and fluid intake, the World Health Organization says.
