Health Tip: Promoting Independence in Children
By LadyLively on April 29, 2015

Independence is fostered in childhood and can set the stage for a lifetime of learning, growing and exploring.
The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests:
- Create limits and set rules for children, following up with a consequence when a rule is broken.
- Establish predictable, regular routines that are followed daily.
- Set guidelines for when television is watched, what kind of programming is seen, and for how long.
- Read to your child each night at bedtime.
- Have as many meals together as possible.
- Chat with your child every day.
- Give your child specific responsibilities and promote independence in self-care, such as getting dressed and bathing.
- Talk to your child about how to be a good friend to others.
