Health Tip: Think You're Getting Enough Calcium?

Calcium is the body’s most abundant mineral. It’s needed to preserve the health of your bones, muscles, nerves and cardiovascular system.

Nonetheless, calcium absorption naturally drops with aging.

The U.S. National Institutes of Health explains these additional factors that affect calcium absorption:

  • How much calcium you consume. The body’s absorption drops the more calcium you get via foods and supplements.
  • Low vitamin D intake.
  • Food interactions. Eating spinach and milk at the same time, for example, lessens the amount of calcium you absorb from the milk.
