Health Tip: Wear a Bike Helment
By LadyLively on April 13, 2016
A helmet is essential for any person who rides a bicycle. Here are guidelines for choosing a safe helmet that should be worn for every ride.
The Cleveland Clinic advises:
- Choose a helmet with a sticker showing that it meets the standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
- If buying a used helmet, avoid one that has been cracked, broken or was in an accident. Also note that an older helmet may not meet current safety standards.
- Make sure the helmet fits snugly but not too tight. It shouldn’t move from side to side or back and forth, and the front should sit about two finger widths above the eyebrows.
- The chinstrap buckle should form a Y below the earlobe, and should be tight enough to allow only one finger between the strap and chin.
- Ask a salesperson familiar with helmet safety for suggestions. Let a child pick out his or her own helmet.
