Healthy Eyes
When it comes to the health of your eyes, contact lenses and lens solution may
not be created equal.
Hi, I’m Dr. Cindy Haines for HealthDay TV.
In a recently published study, more than 500 people with nearsightedness used different combinations of silicone hydrogel contact lenses and lens solutions. The researchers found different rates of negative events, with hydrogen peroxide solutions associated with the lowest number of problems.
As the researchers point out, nearly 90 percent of people who wear contact lenses use them daily. So even uncommon issues related to these products are a concern.
This research highlights the importance of practicing good eye care when you wear contacts. Keep these suggestions in mind for safe contact use:
* Avoid using homemade saline solution or reusing your lens solution
* Before you handle your lenses, wash your hands with soap and water.
* NEVER put your lenses in your mouth.
* Replace your lenses on the schedule that your eye-care professional prescribed.
* If you have symptoms of eye irritation or infection, stop using your contact lenses and contact your doctor.
* Be sure to have regular eye exams
