Ohio Revokes License of One of State’s Last Abortion Clinics

The operating license of one of Ohio’s few remaining abortion clinics was revoked by state officials because it did not obtain a required transfer agreement with a nearby hospital for emergencies.

The order against the Women’s Med Center of Dayton was signed Wednesday by Rick Hodges, the director of the Department of Health. The center has 15 days to appeal and said it will do so, the Associated Press reported.

The center’s license was revoked because it did not name an adequate number of doctors to provide the backup care necessary to qualify for an exception to the hospital rule, according to Hodges, who said the decision was in line with the recommendations of an independent hearing officer.

The move was praised by Ohio Right to Life, the state’s largest anti-abortion group.

NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio said it will support the Dayton center and the medical services it provides, and will take legal action if necessary, the AP reported.

Under Ohio law, ambulatory surgical facilities must have emergency backup agreements with nearby hospitals or get a pardon from that requirement.
