Here are some of the latest health and medical news developments, compiled by the editors of HealthDay:
General Mills Expands Flour Recall
New cases of E. coli sickness are spurring General Mills to expand a recall of flour products potentially related to the outbreak, the company said in a statement.
“The recall is being expanded due to a newly reported illness that appears to have stemmed from the consumption of raw dough or batter linked to flour produced last fall,” General Mills said on Friday.
Now included in the recall are 8 SKUs (stock keeping units or UPC codes) of Gold Medal Flour, 1 SKU of Signature Kitchens Flour, and 1 SKU of Gold Medal Wondra flour. A complete list of the recalled flour products — with SKU numbers to look for on labels — can be found on the General Mills website.
In the meantime, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are warning consumers to refrain from eating raw dough, such as cookie dough, due to the E. coli danger. However, E. coli, “is eliminated by heat through baking, frying, sauteing or boiling products made with flour,” General Mills noted.
