Former Attorney General Janet Reno Dies at 78

Former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno died Monday morning at age 78.

She was the nation’s first female attorney general and served in the Clinton White House from 1993 to 2001, CNN reported.

Reno, who battled Parkinson’s disease for 20 years, died at her home in Miami.

In 2002, Reno ran to become Florida’s governor, but lost in the Democratic primary, CNN reported.

FDA Panel Recommends Approval of New Antibiotic

A new antibiotic has been narrowly recommended for approval by a U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory committee.

In voting 7-6 in favor of the drug solithromycin, from North Carolina-based Cempra Inc., the outside panel of experts said the antibiotic’s effectiveness outweighs the risks of liver toxicity seen in company studies, the Associated Press reported.

The FDA typically follows the advice of its advisory committees.

Cempra is one of the few drug companies developing new antibiotics amid growing bacterial resistance to older antibiotics, the AP reported.
