Nurse and Hospital Settle Lawsuit Over Ebola Infection

A Texas hospital and a nurse who became infected with Ebola while caring for a patient have settled a lawsuit.

Nina Pham sued Texas Health Resources, the parent company of the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, in March 2015. The lawsuit said the company disregarded warnings about the disease, failed to adequately train and equip her to treat Ebola, and violated her privacy, CNN reported.

Pham and another nurse contracted Ebola in October 2014 after treating a man who developed symptoms after arriving in Dallas from Liberia. Pham’s diagnosis was the first known transmission of Ebola in the United States.

Two days after the patient died, Pham was diagnosed with Ebola, even though she wore a mask, gown, shield and gloves while treating the patient. The lawsuit said her employer told her she was at no risk for Ebola and could “freely” see family and friends, CNN reported.

“Texas Health Resources and Ms. Pham have resolved the pending lawsuit, and wish the best for each other going forward,” the parties said in a joint statement.

“All parties have agreed the terms of the resolution are confidential and will not make additional statements or grant media interviews.”
