Health Tip: Dealing With a Disrespectful Child

While occasionally acting out can be a normal part of growing up, frequent disobedience on the part of a child is a problem.

The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests parents evaluate:

  • The level of respect that family members show toward each other, toward personal values, privacy and ideas.
  • The way in which family conflicts are resolved, whether via arguments and violent behavior, or healthy discussion.
  • How do you relate to your child? How do you discipline? Do you frequently yell and spank?
  • The differences between you and your child and your personalities.
  • Any difficulties your child has forming relationships or in school performance.
  • Stressful situations at home.
