Health Tip: Leading Causes of Food Poisoning

More than a million Americans each year suffer the symptoms of food poisoning, including nausea and vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, fever and dehydration.

Here are leading causes of food poisoning, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:

  • Bacteria and viruses, such as Salmonella, norovirus, campylobacter, E. coli, Listeria, clostridium and perfringens.
  • Parasites, such as protozoa or roundworms.
  • Mold, toxins and contaminants, both natural and chemical.
