Health Tip: Help Prevent Traumatic Brain Injury

A violent blow to the head can lead to traumatic brain injury, which can permanently damage the brain. Serious cases can lead to permanent complications or death.

To help prevent traumatic brain injury, the Mayo Clinic advises:

  • Always wear a seat belt, and make sure your vehicle has air bags. Children should always be properly restrained in the back seat, in a booster or child safety seat.
  • Never drive after taking drugs or drinking alcohol.
  • Always protect yourself with a helmet when using a motorcycle, skateboard, all-terrain vehicle, bicycle or snowmobile.
  • Wear head protection during sports that could lead to head injury, such as horseback riding, baseball, football or skiing.
