Health Tip: Preparing for an Ultrasound

By on January 13, 2020

Ultrasound imaging, also known as sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of your body, says the University of California, San Francisco.

To prepare for an ultrasound, UCSF encourages patients to:

  • Inform the provider if you have any allergies or need interpreting services.
  • Leave valuables at home or in your hospital room.
  • Listen to the doctor’s preparation instructions. You may be asked to drink water before the test.
  • Be ready for a 30- to 60-minute exam.
  • Ask the technologist any questions you may have.
