Health Tip: Don’t Pack on Pounds During Holidays

By on December 14, 2015

If your pants always seem to be more snug after the holidays, you’re not alone. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says Americans gain an average of one to two pounds from all that festive eating.

Here are the Academy’s suggestions to avoid holiday weight gain:

  • Don’t starve yourself all day so you can binge on the evening buffet. You’ll probably wind up eating more. During the day, fill up on higher-fiber foods, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
  • Even if you’re eating relatively healthy foods, don’t overdo it. Watch your portion sizes and avoid multiple helpings.
  • Use a smaller plate, and fill it initially with vegetables, fruit or salad.
  • Eat slowly. Wait 10 minutes before going back for seconds. Avoid eating out of boredom.
