Health Tip: Older Children Need a Bedtime Routine, Too

Older children need a consistent bedtime and wind-down routine as much as infants and toddlers do.

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises:

  • School-aged children should take a few minutes every night to tidy up the bedroom before bed.
  • Middle school-aged children may have a less strict bedtime routine on the weekends, but wake time should not vary by much.
  • Bedtime routines should be flexible, but impose limits on bedtime delays.
  • Gradually give your child more independence over the bedtime routine as the child grows older.
